Accessibility
Made to work for everyone.
What we build to, what we do, and what we know is not finished.
What we aim for
We want everyone to be able to make, and be part of, a Tribe & Tale story, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, magnification, or voice control. We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, level AA.
What we do
- The site is built to be used with a keyboard alone. The keyboard focus is always shown with a clear outline, and the main pages start with a link that skips straight to the content.
- Images that carry meaning have a text description. Decorative drawings are hidden from screen readers.
- We measured the contrast of every line of text on the public pages, including text over the painted backgrounds, against the 4.5 to 1 level (3 to 1 for large text).
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall, apart from links inside a sentence.
- Pages reflow to a single column on a phone, down to 320 pixels wide, without sideways scrolling.
- Motion stops for visitors whose device is set to reduce motion.
- Form fields have visible labels, and pop-up windows take focus when they open and give it back when they close.
What we know falls short
We would rather tell you than leave you to find out.
- The pages of the example book are pictures of finished pages, so their words are inside the image. We describe each page, but we do not yet provide the full text of every page.
- The human-check box on some forms is provided by Cloudflare, and we do not control how it behaves with every assistive technology.
- The step where a contributor reviews an illustrated portrait relies on seeing the picture. The contributor or the host can ask us for help with it.
- Automated checks find only part of what matters, and we have not yet had the site reviewed by people who use assistive technology every day. We plan to.
